About Film Circuit
Founded in 1989, Film Circuit is TIFF's successful film outreach programme, bringing the best of Canadian and international films and artists to communities across the country.
Through an alternate model of grassroots distribution, marketing and exhibition, Film Circuit encompasses over 180 groups in over 160 communities across Canada, and helps TIFF lead the world in building markets and audience for Canadian cinema.
Recent Canadian films such as Monsieur Lazhar, A Dangerous Method, Starbuck, Café de Flore, and Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster were among the top-attended Film Circuit screenings in 2012. As well, Film Circuit groups screen a diverse mix of engaging international films, including A Separation, The Artist, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and The Intouchables. Not only does Film Circuit provide filmgoers an opportunity to see films that may not otherwise be available in their region, it also provides distributors with an opportunity to extend the theatrical run of their films.
More than sixty Canadian filmmakers travelled across Canada to introduce their films and participate in Q&A sessions in 2011. Past guests — among them Bruce McDonald, Jean-Marc Vallée, Clement Virgo, Sturla Gunnarsson, Michael McGowan, Ruba Nadda, Deepa Mehta, Jennifer Jonas, Ingrid Veninger, Don McKellar, David Suzuki, and Jonathan Sobol — travelled to thirty communities, from Charlottetown, PEI, to Hudson, Quebec, to North Bay, Ontario, to Salmon Arm, British Columbia.
Film Circuit arranges print traffic, provides development support, researches and prepares film titles and availability lists, offers programming consulting, books guests, and ensures cross–Film Circuit communication. Films screened on Film Circuit are event-based and generally classified as "limited releases." Find out if there is a Film Circuit Location in your community and see what's playing.
