Where Do We Go Now?
A Special Presentation at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival® and winner of the Festival’s 2011 Cadillac People’s Choice Award, Where Do We Go Now? is director Nadine Labaki’s charming and heartfelt follow-up to her successful debut feature Caramel, a Film Circuit favourite in 2008.
Et maintenant on va où?
A rousing musical fable addressing the charged topic of religious differences in the Middle East, Where Do We Go Now? is set in a small Lebanese village isolated from the surrounding world by the hundreds of landmines buried all around it, the morbid legacy of a conflict that has claimed so many lives. When a series of misunderstandings raises tensions between the town’s Muslim and Christian communities, three of the local women — Amal (played by Labaki herself ), Takla (Claude Baz Moussawbaa) and Afaf (Layla Hakim) — take it upon themselves to protect their homes from more strife. To distract the village’s men, who are spoiling for a fight, the three women hatch a series of schemes that boldly defy conventions and taboos, from beguiling the men with a chorus line of Ukrainian showgirls to serving hash cookies at a dance party. But when a skirmish between Christians and Muslims outside the village results in a young man’s accidental death, the already fraught situation is brought to its boiling point and the women realize a more radical tactic is required.
Stylized, irreverent and affecting, featuring lively performances from a cast of both professional and non-professional actors and enlivened by Khaled Mouzanar’s original music and songs, Where Do We Go Now? leavens its sombre subject with beguiling grace and charm.
"Blending magical realism, melodrama and a dose of Bollywood[,] Where Do We Go Now? offers a moving and occasionally exhilarating
cinematic experience." —Adam Mazmanian, The Washington Times
