Short Term 12

A hit at this year's SXSW Film Festival, the sophomore feature from writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton is set in a foster-care facility for at-risk youth, where the young staff try to help their troubled charges while dealing with their own life troubles. The film focuses on Grace (Brie Larson), a passionate and strong-willed supervisor who works at the home alongside her longtime boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher, Jr.). Though Grace is a formidable caretaker for the kids in her charge, her own difficult past — and a surprising future that suddenly presents itself — throws her life off-track. As Grace struggles to help two new arrivals at Short Term 12, she finds in them both a mirror of her own experiences and, perhaps, an unexpected source of redemption.

"It's one of the best movies of the year and one of the truest portrayals I've ever seen about troubled teens and the people who dedicate their lives to trying to help them." - Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

"A compact masterpiece of storytelling that brims equally with ambition and humility. It is, by a wide margin, the best film I have seen so far this year." - Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
