Bond and a vengeful, crossbow-wielding beauty battle a KGB double agent in the Mediterranean as they seek to retrieve a vital missile targeting system.
An accident at sea sends an undercover British spy ship to the bottom of the Mediterranean bearing the ATAC system, which coordinates nuclear launch procedures on all of Britain's Polaris submarines. Sent to Greece to retrieve the ATAC before the Soviets get their hands on it, Bond (Roger Moore) gets caught up in a high-stakes revenge triangle between double agent Kristatos (Julian Glover), who is leading the Soviet attempt to retrieve the ATAC; affable smuggler Columbo (Topol), who has been engaged in a blood feud with Kristatos since the war; and Grecian beauty Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet), a raven-tressed, crossbow-wielding Electra out to avenge the murder of her parents by Kristatos' agents. Scaling back from the extravagance and hokiness of Moonraker — apart from the teaser sequence where Bond polishes off an unnamed but distinctly Blofeldian master criminal — For Your Eyes Only is a refreshingly straightforward, tautly directed Cold War espionage thriller, though it still makes time for the usual round of spectacular setpieces, including a treacherous ski-and-motorcycle chase, a deadly undersea encounter, and a Guns of Navarone-style mountaineering assault on Kristatos' hideout.
