Nicolás Pereda's formally ambitious debut feature laid the groundwork for the increasingly self-referential cinematic world he would elaborate in his subsequent films.
Pereda's debut feature lays the groundwork for the increasingly self-referential cinematic world he would elaborate in his subsequent films, introducing the nucleus of his stock company (Teresa Sánchez and Gabino Rodríguez) and indicating his formal inclinations with its minimalist yet precise visual style. Seeking to prevent his uncles from selling off his ailing grandmother's land, a young man from the countryside (Rodríguez) travels to Mexico City to enlist the help of his estranged mother (Teresa Sanchez), who works as a live-in maid for a wealthy couple. As mother and son struggle to become reacquainted, the social and geographic divisions between them seem to become even more unbridgeable, brilliantly echoed in the long tracking shots that separate them on the screen. "Pereda's debut feature, Where Are Their Stories?, is in many respects his most formally ambitious work, while maintaining tangible connections to the socio-economic realities of contemporary Mexico, connections that will become more abstract in later films" (Michael Sicinski, Moving Image Source).
