The prize-winning fifth feature by Nicolás Pereda is a haunting exploration of family, masculinity, and the latent violence stirring beneath the seemingly tranquil Mexican countryside.

Playing another variation on their recurring mother-son duo, Teresa Sánchez and Gabino Rodríguez return in one of Pereda's most acclaimed films, which expands on the thematic and stylistic motifs the filmmaker had begun to explore in his short film Interview with the Earth. Gabino plays a macho soldier who roams the countryside of Huilotepec, while his mother Teresa becomes slowly unhinged after being abandoned by her husband. Meanwhile, Pereda blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction by interspersing direct-address interview with children and a sixteen-year-old boy named Goliath, who is suspected of murdering his girlfriend. "Pereda's most narratively complex film to date" (Johnny Ray Huston, Cinema Scope), Summer of Goliath is a haunting exploration of family, masculinity, and the latent violence stirring beneath the film's tranquil country setting.
