Frank Cotton got more than he bargained for when he purchased a mysterious puzzle box in Morocco: after he solved the box, he opened a doorway to another dimension inhabited by hideous creatures called the Cenobites, who draw him into their realm and subject him to excruciating and unending sadomasochistic tortures. Years later, a gruesomely skinless Frank is brought back to the earthly plane in the attic of his London home, now inhabited by his brother and sister-in-law, with whom Frank had once had an affair. Reuniting with his lover, Frank tells her that he needs blood to return fully to his human form — but the ferocious demons who took him are not likely to relinquish their hold on him so easily. Adapted by writer-director Clive Barker from his novella The Hellbound Heart, Hellraiser spawned numerous sequels and contributed a truly memorable figure to the pantheon of screen ghouls with the lead Cenobite (played by Doug Bradley), later dubbed "Pinhead" by fans, for obvious reasons.
