Über-serious director Joseph Losey shifted into super-high-camp mode for this delirious Pop Art romp about a beautiful former cat burglar (Antonioni muse Monica Vitti) recruited by British Intelligence to foil a major diamond theft by a blond-wigged supervillain (a barely closeted Dirk Bogarde).
In this delirious, tongue-way-in-cheek romp based on the adventures of the British comic-strip heroine, Italian bombshell and Antonioni muse Monica Vitti stars as Modesty, a former thief recruited by British Intelligence to help prevent a major diamond theft. Teaming with her old partner in crime, master of disguise and expert knife-thrower Willie Garvin (Terence Stamp), Modesty traces the plot to her old foe, criminal mastermind Gabriel (Dirk Bogarde), who lays a devious trap for Modesty and Garvin at his Pop Art-decorated Mediterranean compound. Über-serious director Joseph Losey (The Servant, Accident) shifted into supremely silly mode for this high-camp caper, packed wall to wall with wild Mod fashions and groovy psychedelic backdrops, and graced with the devastating glamour of Vitti, Stamp's Cockney charm, and a barely closeted Bogarde cheerfully camping it up in a platinum blond wig.
