The pizza-loving reptiles made their big-screen, live-action debut in this massive box-office hit that cemented the TMNT multimedia empire.
Mutated into walking, talking, pizza-loving humanoids after coming into contact with a mysterious green substance in their reptilian infancy, the five-foot-tall turtles Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael live in the sewers of New York City, where their mentor, the wise rat Splinter, has trained them as ninja warriors for their ongoing war against the sinister ninja crime lord Shredder and his legion of Foot Clan assassins. Though suitably dank and less science-fictional than the phenomenally popular animated TV series (no talking brains here), this impressively mounted, live-action TMNT (featuring outstanding special effects courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop) is still lighter in tone than the Turtles' original, significantly darker and more satirical comic-book incarnation. The first of three 1990s live-action features, TMNT helped cement the Turtles multimedia empire and, with Bart Simpson, turned "Cowabunga!" into a staple phrase of the early nineties.
