The Caped Crusader battles a mysterious new vigilante and his old nemesis The Joker in this remarkably gritty cinematic spin-off of the critically acclaimed animated series.
When a vigilante called the Phantasm begins knocking off Gotham City's crime bosses, Batman sets out to uncover the masked stranger's identity before the police blame him for the Phantasm's crimes. Meanwhile, Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne is forced to confront his past when an old flame from his college days returns to town — and their troubled reunion goes from bad to worse when the maniacal Joker gets thrown in the mix. Inspired by the classic Batman: Year One graphic novel and rushed into theatres shortly after the debut of the critically acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, Mask of the Phantasm retains and develops the TV show's dark themes, creating a surprisingly mature, emotionally driven Batman tale that looks forward to the gravitas and sombre tone of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
