A mild-mannered computer hacker (Keanu Reeves) has the worst Wednesday ever when he discovers that reality is an illusion, machines rule the earth and he is the only one who can save humanity, in the Wachowski Siblings' hugely influential sci-fi action opus.
Mild-mannered computer analyst and part-time master hacker Thomas Anderson, a.k.a. "Neo" (Keanu Reeves), has the worst Wednesday ever when he discovers that the world he knows is a computer-generated illusion called "the Matrix," and that humanity has been subjugated by a world-conquering, super-advanced artificial intelligence. "Woken up" by a crew of reality-tripping revolutionaries, Neo is informed by their leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) that he may be "The One," the saviour who will break the machines' code and liberate humanity. Given a crash course in gravity-defying virtual-world superheroics, Neo prepares for his inevitable showdown with the Matrix's resident enforcer, the seemingly invincible and perfectly enunciating Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). A mad stew of bastardized Cartesian philosophy, down-market cultural theory, HK-style kung-fu (and gun-fu!) and more tight leather outfits than the AVN Awards, The Matrix became a worldwide phenomenon and confirmed Reeves' place as an action icon. "Whoa" indeed!
