Keanu Reeves stars alongside Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder in Richard Linklater's animated sci-fi fable based on the novel by Philip K. Dick.
In a near-future America whose population is being ravaged by a powerful and dangerous new hallucinatory drug called Substance D, undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) has been assigned to infiltrate a low-level group of dealers in the hope that they will lead him to their suppliers. In order to maintain his cover, no one in his department knows Bob's real name, and he appears at the station only when wearing his "scramble suit," which continually shifts its appearance to hide his identity. Rooming with the perpetually D-addled Luckman (Woody Harrelson) and Barris (Robert Downey, Jr.), Arctor soon becomes hooked on the drug himself, and the lines between dealer, user, informant and cop begin to blur beyond recuperation. A darkly dystopic sci-fi tale based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, A Scanner Darkly follows director Richard Linklater's Waking Life by employing sophisticated rotoscope animation to illustrate its surreal, paranoid, continually morphing world — and also marks perhaps the first time in his career that Reeves has ever been animated on screen.
