Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon star in this huge sleeper hit from the Brothers Farrelly, which sparked a resurgence of boundary-pushing R-rated comedies.

"Is that hair gel?" — Mary (Cameron Diaz)

Geeky, good-hearted high-schooler Ted (Ben Stiller) has his wish come true when he scores a date to the prom with the gorgeous Mary (Cameron Diaz), until an extremely unfortunate turn of events ruins his dream date. Years later, Ted is still not over Mary, and hires sleazy private eye Healy (Matt Dillon) to track her down; however, Healy quickly falls for Mary himself, and uses all the tricks of his trade to try and win her affections. When Ted reunites with her, all his old feelings come rushing back — but he'll have to compete for her not only against the amoral Healy, but a whole host of would-be suitors. A huge sleeper hit, There's Something About Mary sparked a resurgence of boundary-pushing R-rated comedy in the late nineties and early 2000s, though few have equalled it for disgustingly brilliant gross-outs. "Sensational, sicko fun" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).
