Gene Kelly romps through the City of Lights in this lavish, Academy Award-winning musical classic.
S'Wonderful! Winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Score, Minnelli's enduring musical classic stars Gene Kelly as the eponymous Yank, a former G.I. trying to make a living as a painter. Chafing under the attention of the lonely society doyenne (Nina Foch) who has become his patron, the hapless artist falls instead for a young French woman (Leslie Caron), who is reluctantly engaged to the old family friend who protected her during the war (Georges Guétary) — who himself has just unknowingly befriended Kelly. With a rich score of classic numbers by George and Ira Gershwin, including "I Got Rhythm" and "S'Wonderful," this lavish romp through the City of Light culminates in one of the most famous dance numbers in all cinema: a groundbreaking, sixteen-minute-long ballet, mounted at the then astronomical cost of half a million dollars. "The epoch-making dream ballet is unquestionably the greatest set-piece not only in Minnelli's career but in the entire history of the film musical" (Jean-Pierre Coursodon).
